Lucas Foster is Athlete of the Week

Author: Tim Remick

Whats going on, Lucas?  How did your 2016 season pan out?

2016 was epic. It was by far the most progressive and exciting season I’ve ever had. I got to spend a lot of time riding in Summit County, I got to fine tune my skills in the best halfpipes and jumps in the country which was huge for me. I competed quite a bit in the Rev Tour and USASA Open Class events, as well as the Legendary Baker Banked Slalom where I won the Young Ams divison. I also got invited and attended the Launch presented by Snowboarder Mag, which is a big photoshoot with the worlds top 100 young riders. So, overall the season was very productive and fun!

What are some of your inspirations behind snowboarding and Who do you base your style closely off of?

Skateboarding has always inspired my snowboarding. That’s what I do off the snow. I’d say my snowboard style is very similar to my style skating, and I’ve always looked at snowboarding from a different perspective due to being a skateboarder. As far as riders go, I have always loved Danny Davis’ style, he’s a lifelong favorite. But most recently, I’ve been digging riders such as Harry Kearney and Terje Haakonsen. Those guys know how to snowboard very well, and I love watching those guys.

What is your favorite ski resort/mountain to go to for a day of shred and why?

It all depends on the day, but nothing beats riding at home in Telluride. That’s where I was born and raised, so it means so much to me to ride at home with all of my friends and family. I’ve also always loved riding park at Copper. Powder days at Mt. Baker are also an amazing time, waist deep on the steepest terrain I’ve ever ridden!

What music fills up your playlist for a day on the hill?

I don’t listen to music super often while riding, but if I am it’s always to something fast. Usually rap and/or rock. Lately I’ve been listening to lots of Wolfmother and Metallica, I love riding to those guys.

How was this season gone so far and what are some goals you have set for 2017?

2017 has been going well. I had a long summer of preparing for this winter, and I’m feeling really physically and mentally fit.  I competed in the Rev Tour at Copper for halfpipe in December which didn’t go as planned due to not landing my run clean, but I placed 2nd at the Rev Tour qualifier for Slopestyle which prequalifies me for rest of the Rev events, so I’m stoked on that. Otherwise I’ve been shooting a lot of photos and filming a ton, having a blast and I’m stoked for what’s to come.  This season I plan to just keep developing as a rider and work towards reaching my full potential. The past few seasons have been extremely progressive, and this year I plan to fine tune my skill and keep raising the roof on my potential. My goal has always been to be a great snowboarder and not just focus on one event or one style of riding. I want to be good at it all and that’s what I’m working towards. I’m headed back up to Mt. Baker for the banked slalom as the youngest rider in the Pro division, and I’m looking forward to having another amazing and successful trip up there. I’m also planning to compete in rest of the Rev Tours and USASA nationals, and to keep filming and drop a solid video part.

Alright, What’s your power animal and why?

That’s a tough one. For some reason I’ve always been stoked on tigers. Not sure why, but I love how fierce and focused they are. I find that super cool.

Right on, Lucas!  Thanks for stopping by for a chat.  Would you like to thank any supporters before you go?

Thanks to my parents for always backing me in what I do. My dad is the only reason I started snowboarding when I did, and they have always been super supportive. Thanks to Jason Kannon too, he’s my coach/mentor. He’s been a huge part of my development as a rider and as a person in the past couple years. He’s helped me work through a ton of physical and mental challenges. Big thanks to Monster for all the support, and to my other sponsors, Salomon Snowboards, Smith Optics, Dakine, Overthrow Clothing, SkullCandy, Celtek, Stance Socks and Bootdoctors. Also to TSSC. Lastly, all my friends out there! You guys all rule!
