John John Florence returns with a vengeance taking 3rd in the Volcom Fiji Pro

ou probably know that Monster team rider John John Florence sprained his ankle on the Gold Coast in March. If you didn’t, well, he sprained his ankle in March. That kept him out of the water for Bells and Brazil, and so he came into last week’s Volcom Fiji Pro cold. Stiff. Out of practice. And while surfing is nothing like riding a bike, young JJ sure made a case for it. The North Shore native put his Pipe skills to work on its South Pacific cousins, Cloudbreak and Restaurants, racking up a pair of 10-point rides and two heat totals above 19 points. He threaded impossible tubes, he hit heaving sections. And he did it all while wearing a black ankle brace that reminded competitors that if this is John John injured, well…damn. Might be time to start thinking about retirement plans. And while he was stopped in the semis by old man and eventual event winner Kelly Slater, Bali is the next stop on tour, and you’d be mistaken if you think that John John’s not going to change the game on that wave. Barrels. Airs. Warm water. His surfing couldn’t be better suited. Best part is, we don’t have to wait. Event starts Monday.
