Sergeant JR Hobbs is Athlete of the Week

Jr Hobbs from Tallahassee, FL is this week's AOTW. Jr is currently attending collage at FSU and is very focused on BMX and graduating college. Here is what JR had to say:

Who influences you and why?

-A ton of people influence me to ride. I always watch a good edit before for I go out to ride because it always gets me hyped up. I really enjoy watching edits from all the great park riders like Harry Main, Alex Coleborn, Mark Webb and thats just naming a few. But I also enjoy street and dirt edits from riders like Chad Kerley, Garrett Reynolds, and Chris Doyle. But the main people that influence me to ride harder are my friends that I ride with everyday because they make it fun and we joke around most of the time and end up trying stuff that we really wouldn't have tried before. So shout out to all my friends out there!

What/ Who inspired you to ride?

-I actually skated before I rode BMX and even thought BMX was stupid. But then one day my buddy Jared from back home some how convinced me to go to the skatepark one day on his old Dyno that had to have been from the 80’s. As soon as I rolled in I was hooked and never looked back at skateboarding. So if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be doing this interview right now hahaha. Thanks Jare Bear!

What are your proudest moments/ accomplishments in 2013?

-My proudest moments in 2013 have to be getting accepted to FSU and all the videos that I released over the year. Getting into FSU was such an accomplishment because it is my dream school and I worked my butt off in high school to get in, so when I finally got in and started school it was just an awesome feeling because all my work finally payed off. I also feel each edit is an accomplishment because I worked really hard on each one and made sure not only my riding in the videos got better but my editing improved as well. And it feels good to go back and watch an old edit and still get pumped to ride.

Have you had to overcome any challenges that made riding an obstacle at times? (i.e. Injuries, support)

-Yeah for sure, towards the end of the summer I tore my tricep pretty bad and had to go through some pretty intense physical therapy and stay off my bike for three and a half months. After I finally healed about three months passed and I knocked my two front teeth out. Knocking my teeth out was probably one of the weirdest experiences in my life because the feeling was so surreal (partly because I had a concussion). But now I finally got my permanent teeth in which look normal but I’m trying to break down the mental barrier that I built up in my head which keeps me from doing some stuff. But, I will soon get over it and act like it never even happened. #YOLO

What is your daily routine and how do you prepare yourself for a day of riding?

-My daily routine consists of me waking up around seven and going to class which lasts until about 1 or so depending on that days schedule. After class I usually do my homework and spend about an hour or so getting ready for the following day. After that I will probably harass my roommate for a bit then get some food. Then normally around three or four I’ll head out to the dirt jumps or the skatepark and have a good progression session until it gets to dark to ride or until I’m to tired to ride anymore. After riding I go back to the dorm maybe gather up some friends and go out to eat, then head back to the dorm go to sleep and wake up and do the same thing the next day.

Where would you like to see yourself in the next few years?

-Within the next few years I’d like to see myself graduating with a major that I like and a clear career plan set up to follow. I’d also like to keep progressing, making edits, traveling, and competing whenever I can.

Who would you like to thank?

-There’s so many people out there its hard to get them all. I’d like to start by thanking my parents and family for supporting me and raising me with a good head on my shoulders. I’d like to thank my buddy Jared Reiss for getting me into the sport in the first place. I’d like to thank Bryan Lacombe for teaching me all the basics and for helping me progress over the years. I’d want to thank all my boys in Lehigh and Sarasota (especially the Hirts for letting me stay over all the time) for always helping me want to progress and for being fun to hang around. I’d like to thank Freddie Smith and his parents for letting me stay over and ride the ware house all the time, I really appreciate it. Also a huge thank you to Mike spinner for letting me come over and ride all those times and to Joe Taberna, Brian Fox, and Dylan Sheinberg for pushing me to ride harder whenever I was at Spinner’s. The last shout out goes to Spencer and Paul for making this past summer at Woodward the best and thanks Ross for your love of Bananas hahaha.
