How’s it going,
Joey? How has your year been treating
you so far?
The year
has been pretty solid so far. Just happy to be healthy and putting in
consistent results.
You started the
season off with some wins at the Daytona Amateur SX. You must’ve been stoked, yeah?
Yeah the
year started off right with a championship in 250 A and Open Pro-sport at
Daytona Amateur SX. Felt really good to prove to myself and my sponsors that I
can still win!
How did you do at
Loretta’s??
I did
alright, I got 2nd in Open Pro-sport and 3rd in 250 A. For most people they
would be stoked with that result but I know I'm capable of better than that.
Off the bike, you had
some mountain bike adventures that you were stoked about. Tell us a little about your trip to Rays MTB
park and doing the Sliver Rush 50?
Over the
Winter I try to go to Rays Indoor MTB park in Ohio when I'm home. If you are
into BMX or Mountain Biking at all, that place is hard to beat. In the beginning
of June, I did the Silver Rush 50 Mountain bike race, which is 50 miles in
Leadville, Colorado, which is at 10,000 feet elevation. A group of us did the
race, my trainer Pablo Toribio, Davi Millsaps, Alex Ray, and my mechanic Dean
Taylor. We just did a steady pace the whole race and waited up for each other.
It was a long day but was nice to say I conquered it.
You did a few GNCCs
this year as well. How did those go for
you?
They
were more difficult than I thought they were going to be. I decided to race xc2
pro class, and those guys know how to ride tight woods. My first one I did I
got a flat tire and was cramping pretty hard at the end, which wasn't so fun.
The second one I did I was way more prepared, but I had issues with
eating the dirt lol. On the second lap I was up to 3rd and felt pretty good,
then I crashed pretty hard crossing a bridge and broke my bark buster and bent
my bike up pretty bad. Then I ended up crashing another 3 times and after all
that I ended up getting 12th. There are two more I hope to do in October,
hopefully I can fix all those mistakes and end up on the podium.
You made your Pro
Debut at Unadilla this year and came home with 16th overall. How did that
whole day pan out from your point of view?
Practice started off
pretty solid with 13th fastest time. In the first moto I was up to 15th from a
mid pack start, then my bike overheated and it started losing power and I went
back to 18th. So my mechanic and my dad had to do a motor swap between motos.
I didn't have a spare motor so they had to take it out of my practice bike. We
were scrambling to get back up to the line and we barely made it in time for
my gate pick. Then they ended up delaying the race! Once the race finally came
around, it was a mud fest. I came away with a 15th in that moto for a 16th over
all. That was a crazy debut, but it came out pretty well.
Awesome Joey, thanks
and wishing you the very best with the rest of your season! Any shout-outs you would like to make before
you go?
